Operating Systems

You may choose any operating system distribution from the following list. Don't hesitate to ask us to add a new distribution to it. We will probably be able to accomodate most reasonable requests. And if you don't ask for what you want, we won't know there's a demand for it.

We also expect to add Windows later this year.

Not much else. This is for those who want to build a

system from scratch, or who need every last MB of disk space.

If you want a web server on Ubuntu Minimal, you'll have to install it yourself.

Slackware 12.1

Slackware base install

Includes all Slackware sets which don't require X11.

Includes these software sets: A (base), AP (applications), D (development), F (documentation), L (libraries), and N (network tools and applications).

Gentoo 2007.0

Gentoo is a free operating system that can be automatically optimized and customized for just about any application or need. Extreme configurability, performance and a top-notch user and developer community are all hallmarks of the Gentoo experience.

Available in 32-bit only.

openSUSE 10.3

The openSUSE project is a worldwide community program sponsored by Novell that promotes the use of Linux everywhere.

Available in 64-bit only.

OpenSolaris 2008.11

OpenSolaris is an open source project licensed under CDDL, and a community. The project's goals are innovation, collaboration, and the extension of OpenSolaris technology.

Linux - Finnix

Excerpted from the Finnix home page:
Finnix is a self-contained, bootable Linux CD distribution ("LiveCD") for system administrators, based on Debian testing. You can mount and manipulate hard drives and partitions, monitor networks, rebuild boot records, install other operating systems, and much more. Finnix includes the latest technology for system administrators, with Linux kernel 2.6, LVM2, encrypted partitions, etc.

Finnix is not intended for the average desktop user, and does not include any desktops, productivity tools, or sound support.

Finnix is available to all V-Colo users, at no charge for the disk storage, on a read-only volume.
